DIY Felt Catnip Filled Cat Toys

DIY Catnip Filled Cat Toys

Hello cat lovers! Do you treat your kitties just like members of the family?  It’s fun to pamper our feline friends with treats and toys. Today we are going to make cat toys from craft felt pieces. The cat toys are filled with catnip and your kitty friends are sure to go crazy for them. This tutorial uses a blanket stitch to connect the felt pieces and doesn’t require a sewing machine.

Supplies:

All items are available from Target

Start by cutting the felt into a geometric shape like a triangle, circle or rectangle.  Cut two pieces of felt the same size and shape. Thread a needle with a piece of embroidery thread in a contrasting color to the felt. We are going to use a stitch called a Blanket Stitch to join the two pieces of fabric together.

Here’s how to sew a blanket stitch:

  1. Thread the embroidery floss through the needle and tie a knot in the end. Pierce the fabric with the needle and pull it up through the felt.
  2. Pull the thread through and circle back around, sending the needle under the stitch and pulling it forward. Pull tight.
  3. Move down the seam about a 1/4 of an inch and repeat.

Hold the two pieces of felt together and sew the pieces of felt together using the blanket stitch. Leave a one inch gap and fill with stuffing. Sprinkle in some cat nip and sew the rest of the way up.

Toss over to your favorite kitty friend and have fun playing!
