Moving Tips + Tricks You Can Actually Use!

If you have ever packed and moved you know how tiring and overwhelming it can be. There’s so much to do sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin. My husband and I have moved a few times in our married lives together, and right now we’re yet again in another season where we find ourselves getting ready to move!

I’m here to help and share all my tips and tricks that make packing all your belongings and moving a little bit easier. First of all we need to head to Target for some supplies, let’s go!

packing tape with dispenser // utility knife // shipping tape // bubble wrap

You have to have some boxes and packing tape of coarse, and you need a dispenser for your packing tape!  Seriously you can’t pack without this! All this you can get a your local Target, you know what else you can get at Target? Boxes! Yes. Ask your local Target when they get their shipping times and they will give you all the free boxes they have after they unload their stock room. Don’t buy any boxes just head to Target and get some.

While you’re there grab some Sharpie’s, I like to get the bigger ones for labeling boxes and some smaller ones for itemizing what’s in the boxes, especially if it includes bigger and smaller items. Let’s get into the packing tips:

PACK YOUR GARAGE FIRST:

Yup, that’s right! Pack this area first! I know it sounds crazy, but if you’ve ever moved chances are you’ve packed everything else first and then gotten toward the end and realized that you haven’t even touched your garage. Safe yourself the sanity and pack this area first. Take a weekend well in advance before your moving date and sort through everything in your garage and pack it up!

TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PURGE:

Are their items in your home that you haven’t used in over six months to a year? If the answer is yes, take this time to go through your home and purge and clean. There’s no better time than when you’re moving to get rid of stuff you don’t need and donate what you can and throw the rest away. This will also save you time in the long run by not packing up items that you won’t use at your new place.

PACK THE ITEMS YOU DON’T USE EVERYDAY RIGHT AWAY:

There are tons of things in our homes that we don’t access or reach for everyday, once you’ve purged and cleaned start packing those items right away. This can be things like books, art work, craft supplies or start by taking all the pictures and decor items off the wall and pack it up.

HIRE MOVERS OR PLAN FOR HELP:

I can’t tell you how many times we’ve dropped the ball on properly planning help with moving. So take it from me plan this out well in advance. If you can afford to hire movers to help you, do so. If not, ask a few friends to help you. Confirm well in advance with them a time and ask a few more just in case someone falls through or gets sick. Have a back up to the plan.

And lastly, enjoy the process! Moving comes with challenges but also a lot of excitement! Try to enjoy the ride as much as possible and think about the new chapter you’re about to enter with your family! And also, all the new Target goodies you get to search for to decorate your new space!
